Nicholas Simoes da Silva gives vote of thanks at Schuman Lecture
ANU student Nicholas Simoes da Silva has given the vote of thanks to Dr Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade, for delivering the 2018 Schuman Lecture this week.
The annual lecture, presented by the ANU Centre for European Studies, celebrates and explores Europe’s development as a community since the 1950s.
Thanking Dr Malmström for her insightful speech, Nicholas, who is completing a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of International Relations, recalled his own global experiences, joining many others students from around the world on exchange in Paris this year.
“Young people, globalisation’s best hope, must be confident that it does work for all,” Nicholas told a packed audience at University House, including journalists and senior Australian and EU diplomats.
“As we launch the negotiations for an Australia-EU free trade agreement, I would ask that you have the hopes and dreams of young people in your minds.
“For then, I hope, we will be best to positioned to preserve the liberal international order in the decades to come.”

In 2016, Nicholas was among four ANU students to discuss the future of Australia and European Union relations from a youth perspective in a panel broadcast by ABC Radio National’s Big Ideas.
